New York State Senator Diane J. Savino (Staten Island/Brooklyn), who represents most of Boro Park, visited Masbia Soup Kitchen to help serve the meals on Tuesday July 18. Senator Savino, an outspoken fighter for the poor, was greeted by the patrons who were happy to see her come out on such a hot sweltering day. She presented Masbia with a check of five thousand dollars in support of the Masbia soup kitchen. "We`re thankful to the Senator for her support. She`s a great friend of the community and we`re proud that she saw fit to partner with Masbia. It gives us a vote of confidence and much needed support." said Alexander Rapaport Director of Masbia.
As the temperatures outside reached in the upper nineties, the air-conditioned storefront turned soup kitchen is a much needed refuge. "I worked in a lot of the soup kitchens and shelter in the city before I was senator, but nothing is as nice as Masbia", the senator said adding "even air-conditioning you have, which is a must in a day like to day.
Masbia serves kosher food in a restaurant style setting with waiters bringing hot fresh food to the guests seated at the tables. "They`re like angels" said Dina Schwartz a recent widow and senior citizen, pointing to the staff at Masbia. "The food is good, the atmosphere is pleasant, I love it here" she said smiling broadly. Masbia serves close to 150 guests with fresh meals daily.
