Talmud: A Meaningful Fast is Sharing the Food Saved with Those in Need. Donate to Masbia Soup Kitchen

The rabbis of the Talmud teach us that in order to make a fast day meaningful, one should share the money and food they saved by not eating with someone in need.  
אגרא דתעניתא צדקתא. ברכות ו ע"ב 

In a practical sense when fasting, we can better relate to someone who is hungry because they simply do not have food to eat.
