On Monday, September 22, Orthodox Union’s newly appointed executive vice president, Allen Fagin, along with director of field operations Jake Adler and New York directorof political affairs Jeff Leb, visited the Masbia Soup Kitchen Network. Helping to prepare tzimmes with Masbia chef Ruben Diaz, they learned about Masbia’s plans to meet the growing numbers in need of food during the High Holy Days and beyond.

July 28, 2014 Today, July 28th marks the beginning of the “Nine Days,” a time of mourning in the Jewish community. During these 9 days, member of the observant Jewish community refrain from eating chicken or beef in favor of fish. New Yorkers, especially in Brooklyn, might find their frequented restaurants and delis closed or only serving an alternative or half the regular menu containing only fish and dairy. Kosher-Certifiers advise food establishments that are under their certification to cease serving chicken or meat during what’s called the “Nine Days.”

July 17, 2014 Masbia, a network of soup kitchen and food pantries that provide kosher meals to New Yorkers in need, has received $5,000 grant from Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) as part of MassMutual’s national Community Service Award (CSA) program. Masbia is one of only sixteen organizations nationally to receive an award. MassMutual made the grant on behalf of the volunteer efforts of Menashe Silber, a MassMutual agent with MassMutual in Brooklyn.
